The main purpose of heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems is to help maintain good indoor air quality and provide heating comfort through adequate ventilation and filtration. Proper air diffuser filter and HVAC filter maintenance will bring better conditions and air quality to building occupants, as well as improve the efficiency and lifespan of the HVAC system.
HVAC air filter efficiency level
Placing air filters in building ventilation systems can block particulate matter in the air, including animal dander, pollen, mold spores, bacteria, and viruses, depending on the minimum efficiency rating (MERV) of the air filter. For HVAC systems, it is recommended that you use air conditioning system filters with a MERV rating between 8 and 13. The higher the level, the more pollutants are blocked, thus better protecting equipment and building occupants.
The characteristics and advantages of HVAC filters:
Available in standard and custom sizes
Provide MERV versions 6, 8, 11, and 13
Sustainable for up to 3-6 months
Filter harmful particles to protect you from allergens and bacteria
How often should HVAC filters be replaced?
Your air filter should be replaced approximately every 1 to 3 months, depending on the human flow in your environment. The following is a recommended filter replacement table based on the number of residents and pets in your home/office. Since each filter environment is different, we recommend that you regularly check the filter for dirt and dust. A good rule of thumb: If the filter material is no longer visible and covered with a thick layer of dirt and dust, please replace the filter.
How Many Occupants and Pets?
How Much Traffic?
Change Filters Every:
1 occupant, no pets
Low
3 - 6 Months
2-4 occupants, no pets
Moderate
3 months (90 days)
2-4 occupants, 1 pet
Moderate
2 months (60 days)
2+ occupants, 2+ pets
Heavy
1 month (30 days)
What happens if you don't replace the HVAC filter?
If your air filter is not regularly replaced and becomes dirty, it will be more difficult for air to pass through the filter, which is called airflow restriction. When the airflow is restricted by a dirty filter, your HVAC device must work longer and harder to produce the room temperature you need. This airflow restriction may leave stains and may cause damage to your equipment. Not replacing the air filter can also increase your energy costs. When the HVAC unit must work harder and stay longer, it will increase your energy consumption and costs.
